About the Book
In a secured room in Glasgow, Scotland, Angus Young recounts his life to the suited man sitting before him. Once he told his story to entertain, now heโs telling it to save his life.
When Angus made the decision to leave the Outer Hebridean island of Hirta for a better, less hazardous life on the Scottish mainland, he never imagined he would end up engaging in battle on the Somme.
As they wait in the trenches in France, Angus delights his fellow soldiers with tales of growing up on Hirta. Enthralled by descriptions of the dangerous clifftop exploits he had to undertake in order to survive, Angus gives them a glimpse into the closed-off but tightknit island community.
But he soon discovers that danger doesnโt just lurk in the obvious places.
When he upsets the rancorous Sergeant McGarry during basic training, a lifetime of bitterness has the potential to disrupt everything.
Angusโ future now hangs in the balance, and his ability to account for his decisions is the only thing that can tip it in the right direction.
This sweeping coming-of-age Scottish saga is perfect for readers of Ken Follett and Peter Rimmer.
Have you met M J Wattsโฆ
I have heard of many people who promised themselves that, once they retired from work, they would write that novel that had been in their mind during their adult life. I was one of those. In my case, though, the urge came even earlier, as a teenager, but my early efforts were immature and, frankly, pathetic. So, I stored the urge away but carried absorbing impressions and letting the ideas grow.
I retired in 2019, after a mostly fulfilling working life that was notable for the fact that I never really knew where my ambitions lay. I have been a chef, a catering manager, and a publican, but it was in the relatively structured world of HM Civil Service where I achieved notable success, contributing to the delivery of some modern IT systems. Eventually, I realised that technology was moving far too fast for me to keep up, so I retired to spend time writing, playing guitar, traveling, and enjoying good beer and malt whisky.
I continued to dabble in writing over the years but, to be honest, I probably needed a kick up the rear to get going, and there were plenty of friends and family happy to oblige. โThe Worms in Fools' Fingersโ is my first novel, four years in the writing, and published in May 2024. My second novel, โThe Man from the Edge of the Worldโ is complete and schedules for release in July 2026. I have a third novel about 40% complete. And the ideas keep coming.
