A family home should be where you feel safe. Mine was where my family was destroyed.
Thirty years ago, when we lived there, my mother left and never came back. A year later, at Halloween, my father took his own life.
Now I’m back. I inherited our family home, a crumbling four-bed, Victorian house.
It’s the last place I want to be, but it’s also my last chance to put my life back together. My ex ran off with another woman. And my daughter isn’t speaking to me.
I want to reconnect with my daughter and give her the family home she deserves.
But then I find the jade necklace. Behind a skirting board in the kitchen. The one that matched my mother’s eyes and she never took off . . . And a letter.
Going home could be the worst move I ever made.

Lume Books
The Lume and Joffe Books Story
Lume Books was founded by Matthew Lynn, one of the true pioneers of independent publishing. In 2023 Lume Books was acquired by Joffe Books and now its story continues as part of the Joffe Books family of companies.
Joffe Books began in 2014 when Jasper agreed to publish his mum’s much-rejected romance novel and it became a bestseller.
Since then we’ve grown into the largest independent publisher in the UK. We’re extremely proud to publish some of the very best writers in the world, including Joy Ellis, Faith Martin, Caro Ramsay, Helen Forrester, Simon Brett and Robert Goddard. Everyone at Joffe Books loves reading and we never forget that it all begins with the magic of an author telling a story.
We are proud to publish talented first-time authors, as well as established writers whose books we love introducing to a new generation of readers.
We have been shortlisted for Independent Publisher of the Year at the British Book Awards three times, in 2020, 2021 and 2022, and for the Diversity and Inclusivity Award at the Independent Publishing Awards in 2022.
We love to hear from our readers, so please email us about absolutely anything bookish at feedback@joffebooks.com.
